Land Professional Technology

Land Professional Skill Set (8 Credit Hours)

This skill set is designed for individuals employed in the legal industry, oil and gas industry and/or the natural resources industry who wish to expand their skills in relation to real property and mineral leases.  The Skill Set Certificate is designed to prepare students to search deeds at the courthouse, negotiate mineral leases with land owners, understand the many ways land can be titled and understand the instruments used to affect real property.

 

Skill Set Curriculum:

 

LPT 101: Introduction to Oil & Gas Leases (3 credit hours)

This course will provide the student with knowledge of the many facets of oil and gas industry and the required skills for success in the industry. The student will be provided the opportunity to research, present and discuss timely topics associated with being a land professional. These will include courthouse research and paralegal work necessary to negotiate natural resource leases, right-of-way leases and purchase of rights to develop and extract natural resources.

 

LPT 102: Principles of Land Professional Technology (2 credit hours)

To prepare students for the role of the land professional. The course will provide students with an overview of the many facets of the oil and gas industry. Students will also be taught negotiation skills, the role personalities play in negotiations and the general goal of negotiations.


LPT 201: Introduction to Court House Reporting & Abstracting (3 credit hours)

It is expected that by the end of this course each student will learn the process of property transfer, courthouse research and abstracting.  A basic understanding of geology as it pertains to land mapping and surveying to better prepare students for the review of plotting maps.  Students will also gain a general comprehension of courthouse research and participate directly in deed and title searches.
